The B1MGplus project has launched the first version of Let’s talk genomics to stimulate patient and citizen involvement in discussing the ethical and societal aspects of genomic medicine, research and policy development.
Directly accessible via the 1+Million Genomes (1+MG) Framework website, Let’s talk genomics is an online platform designed for people who facilitate conversations with patients and citizens about genomics, including teachers, patient representatives, healthcare professionals, policymakers and science engagement practitioners. The platform provides practical resources to help facilitators explain complex topics in genomics, answer common questions and organise engagement activities, with the goal of fostering societal debate on how genomic technologies and data are used in healthcare and beyond.
The platform is structured around 15 central topics in genomics, divided into two main approaches:
- A lifecycle approach (Genomics through life): it explores life moments and situations where people are most likely to encounter genomic testing or decision-making related genomic data.
- A transversal approach (Big questions in genomics): it addresses overarching ethical and societal questions in genomic data, such as privacy and the integration of AI technology.
Each topic presents common questions, explains scientific concepts in accessible language and signposts engagement resources.
By bringing together trusted information and engagement materials in one online platform, Let’s talk genomics supports the 1+MG initiative's mission to build a trustworthy European genomics ecosystem and strengthen patient and citizen engagement.
The first release of Let’s talk genomics includes two fully developed topics (At birth in the lifecycle topics and Managing vulnerability in the transversal topics), as well as introductory content for the remaining 13 topics. The second release, planned for 2027, will expand the content on all topics with additional information, engagement materials and practical resources.
