In September 2025, the Beyond One Million Genomes Plus (B1MGplus) project held a webinar on how to use the Maturity Level Model (MLM) for Genomics in Healthcare. The MLM is a framework for assessing the maturity of an organisation and defining a path for optimisation. In the context of genomics and healthcare, it helps European countries assess and enhance the integration of genomics into their healthcare systems.
The MLM for Genomics in Healthcare was developed by the Beyond One Million Genomes (B1MG) project for the 1+Million Genomes (1+MG) countries to evaluate the maturity level of genomics in healthcare in eight key domains: governance and strategy, investment, ethics and legislation, public awareness, workforce skills, clinical organisation, genomic guidelines and data management standards. Each domain is assessed across five maturity levels, from emerging to optimised practice.
The model’s structured self-assessment approach allows national teams to identify strengths, weaknesses and investment priorities for the implementation and sustainability of genomic medicine in the healthcare system. As a benchmarking tool, it supports comparisons across Europe to exchange best practices and prioritise investments.
The webinar included results of a pilot of the MLM in national and regional healthcare systems from eight European countries: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal and Spain. The pilot identified challenges in implementing genomic medicine in healthcare systems across Europe and stimulated discussions among European healthcare stakeholders.
